Project Description: Students will participate in a color wheel detective activity to learn about complementary colors. They will select a pair of colors and draw a caterpillar with an “every other” color pattern on a plant. They will draw a butterfly to match with an “every other” line pattern and add details to the tree, including optional insects and other stages of the caterpillar’s life. Artworks Studied: Maria Sibylla Merian Metamorphosis of a Butterfly 1705 Hand colored copperplate engraving Dutch Other drawings by Merian used to show variety and possibilities in life cycle drawings Big Ideas & Related Art Concepts: Nature: Line, Shape, Color, Space, Balance, Pattern, Repetition Life Cycles: Isolation, Size Essential Questions: How are we influenced by the world around us? How does nature work in cycles? Differentiated Instruction: -Examples of types of lines and insects (insects not required) -Use visuals and gestures to accompany verbal descriptions -Kinesthetic learning activated by use of manipulatives and dance activity Objectives: •Identify complementary colors •Create “every other” patterns using color and line •Describe the life cycle of the caterpillar and explain why each insect and plant is in the painting How Each Objective Will Be Assessed: 1. [Informal, Formative]- Group discussion; [Formal, Summative]- depiction of life cycle in artwork; [Informal, Summative]- Pretend to be caterpillars Materials: For students: Drawing paper, Construction Paper Crayons, Caterpillar worksheet and color wheels, Butterfly stencil For teacher: Helper chart, Rules Poster, Vocabulary Poster, Poster of Primary Image, Poster of Secondary Image, Poster of types of lines to use, Color Wheel NYS Learning Standards met: Visual Arts-Elementary: 1a, 1c, 1e, 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 4a Vocabulary & Language Demands: Students will identify and properly use these words: Line, Shape, Color, Symmetry, Pattern, Size, Butterfly, and Caterpillar Students will compare and contrast the sizes of the caterpillar and butterfly. They will model artistic techniques for one another. Students will construct full sentences based on verbal and written prompts. |
